An important part of the work of Seeing Things Whole is its effort encourage theological thinking and writing about the nature and purpose of institutions. The original invitations to pursue this work around
a theology of institutions came independently from two individuals who never, as far as we know, knew one another.
Jitsuo Morikawa was leader in the American Baptist church and spoke
passionately about the importance of evoking and provoking
(institutions) "to a fresh discovery and discernment of their true
purpose and calling." Robert Greenleaf, who had in his earlier writings
laid the conceptual groundwork which introduced servant leadership, also
called for a theology of institutions, saying If a better society it to
be built, one that is more just and more loving, one that provides
opportunity for its people, then the most open course is to raise both
the capacity to serve and the performance as servant of existing major
institutions.
Now we have video footage of Robert Greenleaf, in which he
makes his case for importance of developing a theology of institutions.
